11.20.2006 - Philadelphia - Authorities seem to have little doubt. Officials concede it looks very much like the police cruiser seen in this image was drag racing.
That becomes an even bigger problem when the video shows up on the Internet.
In the home video a Philadelphia Police car is seen pulling up and another two cars are seen pulling up beside it as people cheer and applaud.
The audience cheers as they watch the officer in his police car apparently taking part in a drag race -- the very activity he's supposed to be combating.
Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross called the images disturbing.
Not surprising, and much to the police department's dismay, the video has found its way to You Tube.
"We are tasked with preventing this type of activity. To think that a police officer would engage in such activity is unconscionable," said Ross.
For years Philadelphia Police have been battling illegal drag racing along Delaware Avenue. Action News has also obtained home videos from other local street races.
Street racers thru the years have told us they wished police would cut them a break.
It now appears that one officer not only did, but also joined in the illegal activity.
Internal Affairs has launched a full investigation.
"People get hurt with this drag racing thing. I know there may have been people out there who don't recognize the gravity of it, but we can't have police officers engaged in this type of activity," said Ross.
The police commissioner was incensed upon hearing of this incident. He says the department will move full speed ahead to determine the police car involved and who was behind the wheel.
They are asking one who has further information about this incident to contact police internal affairs.
