11.12.2006 - Sandwich Police Officer W. Patrick McBride has been discharged from the police force after spending more than three months on paid administrative leave while an investigation was being conducted into allegations of misconduct on his part.
McBride is expected to appeal the decision.
"The town has been put on notice of Mr. McBride's intent to appeal this decision," said Sandwich Town Administrator Bud Dunham in a press release.
The statement said the Sandwich Police Department concluded its investigation into allegations of misconduct by McBride and issued his formal discharge as of Nov. 9.
"This investigation included interviews with civilian witnesses, as well as members of the department," the statement read. "In addition, certain statutory and contractual due process requirements have been adhered to relative to Officer McBride's rights under law. Effective Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, Mr. McBride was discharged by the Town Administrator from the Sandwich Police Department."
The statement went on to say that, given the pending litigation and privacy rights of all involved, "the Town and the Department will provide no further comment."
The alleged incidents took place at Sandwich Taverna July 7 and 8. On July 7, a waitress at the Route 130 restaurant alleged that McBride touched her without her consent, prompting the restaurant manager, Thanos Gossios, to ask McBride to leave.
The following evening, McBride was on-duty and was said to have initiated a compliance check of the restaurant, which he completed along with several other Sandwich officers. The timing of the check was suspicious, said the owners, given the incident the previous evening.
A 12-year veteran of the police department, McBride's conduct was under scrutiny in 2005 when he was assigned to Sandwich High School as the juvenile detective. Accusations were made that McBride had an inappropriate relationship with a high school student while he was the juvenile detective. The officer was cleared of all the charges, but was reassigned as the department's court officer.
