12.28.2006 - A Winooski police officer is "not actively employed" after his involvement in a traffic stop that took place shortly before an intoxicated 18-year-old passenger was sexually assaulted by two men.
Winooski City Manager Gerry Myers and Police Chief Steve McQueen declined to name the officer nor go into details about his part in the traffic stop. Both said the matter was immediately internally investigated.
Two Winooski police officers stopped a car in which the 18-year-old victim was a passenger at about 3 a.m. Sept. 9. The officers arrested the driver, who was also intoxicated. The 18-year-old passenger was released without being arrested, according to Myers. She left on foot, Myers said.
Later that night, two men, identified by police as Kenneth K. Davis and George Bradford, allegedly picked her up, brought her to a home on Cedar Street in Burlington and sexually assaulted her.
The victim was treated and released from Fletcher Allen Health Care, according to the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.
Bradford, 27, and Davis, 23, were charged this week with aggravated sexual assault. They are being held at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington without bail.
Myers said the officer is "not actively employed" by the Winooski Police Department but declined to elaborate. He said a person representing the victim has come to the city, asking for information related to the case, but no lawsuits have been filed.
"The city obviously offers their condolences to the victim," Myers said. "We're very happy these guys are off the streets."
