Sheriff Brian Gilbert
July 29, 2006 - DES MOINES, Iowa -- The attorney for the Dallas County sheriff told NewsChannel 8 that charges will be filed against the sheriff Friday and that he would be arrested.
Sheriff Brian Gilbert is being investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation since money turned up missing from a Dallas County drug bust in March. Court records show that Gilbert drove the money back to the sheriff's office, but he stopped at his house first.
Gilbert said he had to check his garage door, and deputies said a bag was missing when the money was later counted, according to court documents. Gilbert took an extended vacation, but returned to his job in May.
Gilbert's attorney, F. Montgomery Brown, told NewsChannel 8 that he would not confirm what the charges would be.
So far, no charges have been filed in connection with the case.
