07.28.2006 - July 28--Dallas County Sheriff Brian Gilbert was charged with one count of first degree theft this morning, in connection with missing money from a traffic stop. Sheriff Gilbert turned himself in to DCI agents this morning, who took him to the Polk County Jail for processing. He posted bond and is out of police custody. In March of this year, Gilbert went on voluntary vacation when the investigation into the missing money began. A Dallas County deputy involved in that traffic stop says the money was in Sheriff Gilbert's possession when it disappeared. The Department of Criminal Investigation is handling the case, at Gilbert's request. After being on that vacation for seven weeks, Gilbert returned to work in May. An 11:00 am news conference to discuss the investigation is scheduled by the head of the Division of Criminal Investigation, Gene Meyer. www.whotv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5209846&nav=menu100_2
