07.21.2006 - MISHAWAKA β A Mishawaka police officer who faced misconduct charges in connection with the mishandling of property taken from a city resident has resigned. Police Chief Kenneth Witkowski said Cpl. Jeffrey Stanifer resigned βfor personal reasons.β The Mishawaka Board of Public Works and Safety accepted the resignation effective today. The board also dismissed misconduct charges against him. Those charges could have resulted in punishment ranging from a 180-day suspension to losing his job. Witkowski submitted charges of violation of rules, immoral conduct, conduct unbecoming an officer and breach of discipline. Documents with details of the charges said that Stanifer took possession of two DVDs, several smoking pipes and a tray on March 4. He was charged with showing the two DVDs to fellow officers later in the day while on duty and telling them that the DVDs came from a call. The items were also improperly classified, according to the charges. Stanifer was on paid administrative leave before his resignation. The charges were filed with the Board of Public Works and Safety June 13. He had requested a hearing before the board. www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060718/News01/60718011/CAT=News01
