06.02.2006 - CHESAPEAKE - A police lieutenant has been charged with three counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.
David D. Thom, 47, of Lydney Circle was charged May 13 in connection with part-time security work done for Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority, according to court papers and a police report.
One of the charges is a felony , which authorities say occurred from Feb. 4 to Feb. 26, 2005, court documents show. The other two are misdemeanors that occurred from July 23 to Aug. 11, 2005, and Oct. 20 to Nov. 3, 2005.
Commonwealth's Attorney Nancy Parr has appointed a special prosecutor from Virginia Beach to handle the case, according to a letter filed in Chesapeake General District Court. Thom was released on a $2,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear before a judge next month.
Brenda G. Willis, executive director of the housing authority, was not available for comment.
Thom is the second police officer in Chesapeake to be charged with a crime within a month.
On May 19, Michael G. "Greg" Rowe, 46, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Rowe of the 500 block of Corapeake Drive was arrested after he ran off Butts Station Road in a sport utility vehicle and struck a tree, according to court papers.
He was released on a $500 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Police do not release information about whether police officers remain on duty after they are charged, a spokeswoman said last month.
