04/17/2006 - CLERMONT -- Authorities have arrested a Leesburg detective on charges of stealing DVDs from a Target, according to police.
Troy Twigg, 31, an eight-year veteran of the Leesburg department, was booked into the Lake County Jail on Tuesday on petty theft charges. He was released later that night after posting $250 bond.
The incident is alleged to have occurred Tuesday evening at the Target on State Road 50 in Clermont. The store's loss prevention officer alerted police after he said he saw Twigg conceal two DVDs in his pants, according to an arrest report.
When Twigg tried to leave, the employee stopped him and asked the detective to go to the security office. When Twigg went to the office, he told the employee that he was a police officer and he was armed with a handgun, the arrest report said. The gun, which was in a holster in his right-front pocket, was placed in evidence for safekeeping, according the arrest report.
Leesburg city officials said Twigg, who is a senior detective, has been on medical leave. They would not provide more details. The police department plans to do an internal investigation to determine what disciplinary action Twigg might face.
