04/03/2006 - SEYMOUR — A veteran town police officer has been arrested on a larceny charge in connection with a theft from a local business. Officer John Harkins was arrested on a fifth-degree larceny charge Friday after officers searched his home and seized an item he was accused of taking from the business, Lt. Robert Fox, police spokesman, said.
Fox disclosed neither the name of the business nor the item reportedly taken from it.
Harkins, placed on administrative leave following his arrest, was released on a promise to appear next Monday in Derby Superior Court.
His arrest followed a decision by Board of Police Commissioners to suspend him for six weeks for violating Police Department rules.
Harkins was accused of failing to respond
promptly to a 911 call in January as well as posting a photograph of himself in uniform on an Internet dating site, officials said. These three episodes came in the wake of a troubled past in which Harkins was fired in 1998 for failing to come to work as supernumerary, an on-call officer who works as needed.
Harkins won his job back in court and returned to duty in 2001 after contending he was wrongfully terminated.
