09.18.2006 - ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orange County deputy, who was shot with a stun gun during a confrontation with Orlando police officers will face a trial Monday. Jury selection was underway Monday in the case against Officer Michelle Velez. The sheriff's office fired Velez last October following an internal investigation of the incident. She had been a deputy for nearly four years. Velez was charged with battery on an officer and resisting an officer. The charges all date back to July of 2005, when Orlando police were called to the Northbridge Apartments to settle an argument between Velez's sister and her husband. Deputy Velez drove to the scene herself to help settle things, but Orlando police said she became confrontational and had to be hit with the stun gun. But Velez claimed she was reaching for her badge to identify herself when she was shot. Prosecutors offered a deal Monday morning right before jury selection started. It involved probation and an apology, but no jail time. Velez and her lawyer rejected it. If convicted she could face a max of 11 years behind bars. www.wftv.com/news/9875784/detail.html
