LAKE ARTHUR, NEW MEXICO - A Lake Arthur police officer has resigned after he was accused of firing his department-issued Taser at his stepson.
Lake Arthur Police Chief Will Norwood says Ben Torrez was given the opportunity to resign or be fired, and he opted to resign August Tenth.
Chaves County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Rob Coon says Torrez was charged Aug. 3 with two counts of aggravated battery.
Sheriff’s officials say 18-year-old Derek Duarte was shot with a Taser July 28th at his home during an argument with his girlfriend and stepfather.
Torrez was off duty at the time.
