A Montgomery County Jail deputy found himself behind bars Friday night after a fight with his sister-in-law.
Deputy Eddie Mitchell, 46, was charged with domestic assault after Clarksville police were called to Mitchell's Gusty Lane home.
Mitchell's sister-in-law — who was visiting — told Officer Joey Williamson the deputy yelled and spit in her face during an argument, before he pushed her onto a couch. It was there, she said, Mitchell put his hands around her neck, choked her and pulled her hair, according to a written statement.
The statement further indicated Mitchell poured beer on her when she stood up from the couch.
Mitchell acknowledged in his own written statement he has had a "longtime disrespect and verbal confrontation with my sister-in-law."
Mitchell told authorities the fight started after he asked her to leave his home. He said she tried to hit him while he was yelling at her, according to his statement.
Williamson transported Mitchell to the jail, where he was interviewed by his supervisor, Lt. Dan Armstrong, and booked shortly before 9 p.m.
Mitchell was not held the typical 12 hours imposed for domestic assault arrests. He was released at 11:30 p.m. on $1,000 bond. General Sessions Judge Wayne Shelton opted to waive the 12-hour jail stay, allowing Mitchell to be released on his own recognizance.
Shelton said he "made a judicial decision to do so," and declined to comment further Saturday night.
Mitchell has been placed on administrative leave with pay at the jail, pending the completion of an investigation, said Sheriff's spokesman Ted Denny.
Mitchell will appear Sept. 1 in General Sessions Court
