An Ogdensburg Police Officer who admitted to driving drunk while off-duty will continue to protect and serve. The decision for William Lanfear, 42, to keep his job comes after 7 to 10 days of negotiations between the city and Lanfear's attorney.
Attorney John Collins said, "We came up with a resolution that I think is amicable. There's some sanctions that have been put in place, appropriate sanctions."
Cop's job reinstated
An Ogdensburg Police Officer charged with DWAI last month pleaded guilty in court Wednesday. News 10 Now's Dana Hendrickson tells us he will keep his job.
State Police charged Lanfear with driving while ability impaired and failing to yield at a stop sign last month. On the night of November 9th, they said he hit a car at the intersection of Elizabeth and Jay Streets.
The city manager and Ogdensburg Police declined to comment. Lanfear's attorney said he's been suspended for 90 days without pay, has taken a small reduction in his pay, and is on two years probation.
John Collins, Lanfear's attorney
Collins said, "With those things, we think they are all appropriate sanctions. And again, we appreciate the city's willingness to work with us in saving his job."
People who live here in Ogdensburg said they commend the police department, but they just hope Lanfear was treated like anybody else.
Ogdensburg resident Virginia Leamy said, "I was a teacher at OFA, and I do know of a case where not a student, but a staff member, was caught with a DWI and let go."
"I just feel that everybody should be treated the same no matter what their job is."
But, residents said because Lanfear's job is saved, it gives the officer another opportunity.
Ogdensburg resident Ward Leamy said, "If he's a family man and has a family, then he should have a second chance."
Lanfear's attorney said he voluntarily checked himself into a rehab center following the incident and is happy to remain on the force.
Police said there were no injuries in the November 9th accident.
