12/21/2006 Cortland (WSYR-TV) - The former Cortland Police Officer who was charged with driving drunk after hitting two pedestrians with his vehicle made a court appearance in Cortland City Court this morning. Jeffrey Stockton resigned from the Cortland Police Department following the November 17th accident. Lyn Briggs and Melody Benn were both hit by Stockton as he was making a left-hand turn in Cortland. Briggs died from her injuries on December 2nd. According to court documents, Stockton admitted that he had been drinking prior to the accident and that he was text messaging a girl on his cell phone when he hit the women. Stockton was off-duty at the time of the incident. Stockton failed to appear in court last month, because his attorney says he had entered rehab. Stockton didn’t say anything this morning during his court appearance. “From the first moment of this tragedy, he has never avoided the implications of his conduct, and he does not intend to start,” Stockton’s attorney Mark Suben said this morning. “I’ve said our hearts go out to that family, and I’m speaking for Mr. Stockton and I’m speaking for myself. I have said that, and will continue to say that. We wish them God speed in dealing with this tragedy.” Stockton was initially suspended from the Cortland City Police Department with pay, then without pay. Stockton eventually resigned. Stockton is facing vehicular assault and drunk driving charges. www.9wsyr.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=54d587e7-85f9-423f-9780-4b23727b476d
