Officer Jeffery "Chip" Stockton 11.30.2006 - The Cortland Police officer charged with DWI after hitting two pedestrians has checked himself into rehab. Officer Jeffery "Chip" Stockton's, 38, appearance in court was excused today because he is currently seeking treatment. Police say Stockton was off duty when he hit two 55-year old women while they were crossing Church Street in Cortland. Lyn Briggs remains in critical condition at University Hospital. Family members say doctors have given her little chance to live. Stockton has also been charged with vehicular assault. "He has handled this with great dignity. He has never avoided the implications of what happened he has been forthright" said Mark Suben, Stockton's lawyer. 12.08.2006 - The Cortland Police Officer charged with driving drunk and hitting two pedestrians has resigned from the police department. One of the women who Officer Jeffrey Stockton allegedly hit died from her injuries. The accident happened on the night of November 17th. Police say Officer Jeffrey Stockton was making a left-hand turn in the city when he hit pedestrians Lyn Briggs and Melody Benn. The two women were in a crosswalk, attempting to cross the street. Stockton was off duty at the time of the accident. According to court documents, Stockton admitted that he had been drinking prior to the accident and that he was text messaging a girl on his cell phone when he hit the women. Briggs died from her injuries on December 2nd. Benn is recovering at home.
