11.18.2006 - A Philadelphia police officer accused of rear-ending another vehicle in Bucks County early Sunday morning was charged yesterday with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and other offenses, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Officer Robert J. Sharkus Jr., a veteran narcotics officer, was driving a city-leased 2006 Ford F-150 truck northbound on Interstate 95 in Bensalem Township about 4 a.m. when he passed another car at a high rate of speed, state police said. As Sharkus changed lanes, he crashed into the car ahead of him, a 2002 Infiniti, being operated by Shawn Bullock, 26, of Trenton, police said.
Both vehicles were severely damaged. And both vehicles' drivers were treated at Frankford Hospital-Torresdale Campus along with Sharkus' 18-year-old daughter, who was in the truck with him. Sharkus refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test after the accident, authorities said.
The incident is also being looked at by the Philadelphia Internal Affairs Bureau, which has said that a preliminary investigation indicates that Sharkus, a 25-year veteran, had been at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, on Spring Garden Street near Broad Street, with his daughter before the accident.
Investigators were looking into whether Sharkus was using the truck for personal use, and why his daughter was in the vehicle. That vehicle was only to be used for police investigations, and officers are not supposed to drive others in the vehicle if not for law enforcement purposes.
