11.10.2006 - An Arlington police officer faces a public intoxication charge after he was involved in an early-morning collision and failed to stop, police said Thursday.
Officer Bao Trinh, 28, was arrested about 3 a.m. after he rear-ended another vehicle in northwest Dallas, said Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, a Dallas police spokeswoman.
Trinh, a resident of Allen, was at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center Thursday. Bond had not been set, said Deputy Raul Reyna of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.
In addition to the public intoxication charge, Trinh faces a charge of failing to leave information before leaving an accident scene.
Trinh will be on paid administrative leave while Arlington and Dallas police investigate, said Christy Gilfour, an Arlington police spokeswoman.
Trinh is assigned to Arlington's west patrol district and has earned five commendations since he joined the department in January 2005, Gilfour said.
The collision occurred about 2 a.m. in the 2300 block of westbound West Northwest Highway, Crowther said.
Witnesses told police that Trinh's 2004 Lexus struck a 2003 Saturn that was slowing for a yellow light, Crowther said.
The Saturn driver, a 20-year-old Grand Prairie woman, and her two passengers were not hurt, but her car had an estimated $1,000 damage, Crowther said.
Witnesses said the Lexus made a U-turn and left the accident scene, Crowther said.
A tow-truck driver followed the car and got the license plate number.
A short time later, Crowther said, the truck driver saw the Lexus return to the scene, but then kept going.
The witnesses said the car continued north on a North Stemmons Freeway service road before it became disabled and Trinh began walking, Crowther said.
Officers caught him on nearby Lombardy Lane, Crowther said.
