TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN - A local state police trooper won't lose his job for crashing his vehicle after a night of drinking and fleeing the scene, then falsely reporting that the vehicle had been stolen.
Instead, Traverse City post trooper David Meder, 46, is to receive an undisclosed form of internal discipline and will continue patrolling area roadways.
A state police internal investigation determined Meder violated the department's code of conduct, said Capt. Tim Rod, who commands the state police 7th District headquarters in Traverse City.
But Rod wouldn't specify what disciplinary action will be taken against Meder. He said only that Meder remained on active road patrol duty, as had been the case during the internal investigation. Rod said terms of the trooper's employment contract prevented him from disclosing details about Meder's personnel record.
Meder was sentenced in June to 180 days of probation and $6,445 in restitution after pleading guilty to a pair of misdemeanors for failing to report an accident on May 18 in Grand Traverse County's Peninsula Township.
Meder lost control of his SUV on Peninsula Drive late May 18 and crashed into a utility pole.

Some people argue that Police officers are only human and so make mistakes.
Judging from this police officers actions and accountability for his crimes the rest of us civilians are not human.
