08.08.2006 - The Nevada County Sheriff’s lieutenant facing felony drunken driving charges has retired, according to the sheriff. Former Nevada County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Hughes, 57, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving June 9 after he crashed his van on Highway 174 into a Ford Focus, injuring the driver. He pleaded innocent to the charge July 31 in Placer County Superior Court. Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal had placed Hughes on administrative leave since his arrest, but reported Monday that Hughes has retired. According to the county’s website, Nevada County is a member of the Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and retirement benefits are provided at three percent of an employee’s salary per year at the age of 50 for public safety employees. Royal has said that anyone convicted of a felony cannot work as a sheriff’s deputy. www.theunion.com/article/20060807/WEBUPDATE/60807004/-1/NEWS
