04/26/2006 - A Rockledge police officer arrested on charges of drunken driving last week has been suspended with pay from his job.
Jonathon Ackerman, a 40-year-old criminal investigations officer who joined the department in April 1998, was charged with one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving under the influence with property damage, according to a Satellite Beach arrest report.
"Right now, we have to figure out what's going on with that (case) until we proceed any where," Rockledge police Sgt. Donna Seyferth said.
About 2:18 a.m. April 19, Satellite Beach police officer Chris McHugh saw a motorist headed southbound on State Road A1A and veering onto the roadway's shoulder, an arrest report states.
The southbound vehicle later traveled at a high rate of speed, veered off the road into a ditch, went airborne and hit two road signs. It then did a complete rotation across all lanes of traffic on SR A1A and landed backward in some bushes on the east side of SR A1A, the police report states.
The driver had bloodshot eyes, wobbled, had slurred speech, a strong odor of alcohol and vomit on himself, the report states.
McHugh said Ackerman told him he had been drinking with friends at a Cocoa Beach nightclub, the report states. Ackerman refused to take a breath test and give an interview, the report states.
Whether Rockledge police take more action against Ackerman relies on the outcome of the Satellite Beach police criminal investigation, Seyferth said.
Reached past office hours Tuesday, Seyferth said she wasn't able to get Ackerman's personnel file until today, which would indicate whether Ackerman has been commended or reprimanded during his tenure.
Ackerman currently earns $40,500 a year, a city clerk said.
Ackerman posted $500 bond and was released from Brevard County jail the same day of his arrest, a jail official said.
"The officer who made the arrest did show genuine concern for him, but understood the importance of doing his job the best it could be done," Satellite Beach police Cmdr. Brad Hodge said.
