03/17/2006 - A Dillon County sheriff’s deputy faces a charge of driving under the influence after a Wednesday night collision in his patrol car.
Officer Terry Lee Small, 57, was arrested after S.C. Highway Patrol officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 301 in Dillon, highway patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden said.
Small was off duty at the time, Dillon County Sheriff Harold Grice said.
He wasn’t wearing a uniform, but had been driving his sheriff’s office vehicle, Gaulden said. The front end of Small’s car was damaged, Gaulden said.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision had apparently left the scene by the time the highway patrol arrived, Gaulden said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol won’t know exactly why the crash happened until the other driver is found or comes forward, he said.
Officers administered a field sobriety test to Small, Gaulden said.
Small took a breathalyzer test after arriving at the Florence County Detention Center, but Gaulden said he hadn’t received the results.
Small was released from custody at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Florence County booking reports. The amount of his bond was unclear.
Grice said he hadn’t made any decisions on Small’s job status with the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office.
“I’ll probably talk to him tomorrow (Friday),” when Small was scheduled to return to work, Grice said.
The deputy wasn’t scheduled to work Thursday at the sheriff’s office, Grice said.
