05/12/2006 - A Mecklenburg County sheriff's deputy was taken into custody at the jail where he works this week when he was arrested on a charge of driving while impaired.
Esco Walker, 30, was arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday in Mecklenburg County, jail records show. He was charged with speeding and driving while impaired, court records show.
Walker works in arrest processing at the Mecklenburg County jail. That's where he was taken when the N.C. Highway Patrol brought him in. He was released on an $1,000 unsecured bond that morning.
The deputy sheriff has worked for the Sheriff's Office for more than eight years, said office spokeswoman Julia Rush. He was last disciplined in October 2002 for reporting late to work, she said.
Walker is continuing to work in arrest processing while authorities conduct an internal investigation, Rush said.
The deputy could not be reached for comment Thursday. He is scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg District Court on May 31, court records show.
