05.26.2006 - A drug bust on Monday night netted four suspects but also an apology from police.
A Richland-Iowa-Grant Drug Task Force executed a high-risk drug search warrant for a Dodgeville residence on Monday night. Police said they took four suspects into custody and found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and money.
The Iowa County district attorney will decide formal charges for the suspects, WISC-TV reported.
But that apartment door wasn't the first the task force knocked on Monday night. Police actually busted in and arrested the suspects' neighbors first.
On Monday at about 10:15 p.m., a joint task force was at the front door of Kristina Radke's apartment, intending to use the element of surprise and bust into what they thought was a drug house.
Police set off a flash-bang explosive, broke the front window and rammed the door open. They came in yelling "Get down, get down," but Radke has a hearing and physical disability, which made it hard for her to immediately respond, WISC-TV reported.
Police handcuffed and arrested Radke and her boyfriend, Kenneth Berhenke, then about 10 minutes later they realized they had the wrong address and were supposed to have entered the apartment next door, WISC-TV reported.
"They put me in handcuffs and hurt my wrist, then they realized they had the wrong apartment," said Radke. "I'm still shaking -- I could barely sleep last night."
Radke said she now has a sore wrist, two doors dented in and a broken front window that spread glass all over her living room. The window was replaced by the apartment supervisor this morning, WISC-TV reported.
Dodgeville police Chief David Kieffer visited Radke Tuesday morning to see how she was doing and to check if she needed help with repairs.
He said the task force members take full responsibility for the mistake.
