09.19.2006 - Authorities arrested Officer Renee Diaz for possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics for sale, and possession of drug paraphernalia after a "reliable, confidential source" tipped them off to the officer's home. Lt. Carlos Guido, who says the department obtained a narcotic search warrant, said, "We found 227 grams of cocaine along with packing materials and some weighing devices to indicate there was trafficking of narcotics taking place from his residence." The 29-year-old had worked at the Douglas prison for less than 2 years when he got busted. Authorities don't think he was supplying inmates. His boss, Warden Shelly Sonberg, says that Diaz no longer works for the prison nor does he reflect their system. Sonberg said, "We're in the law enforcement field and we take our job very seriously. We never want this to happen. It's always surprising." Lt. Guido says that an incident like this is rare. "We haven't had anything like this happen in a long while, not because it's correction, but because corruption can happen at any level," Guido said. The prison let police in to interview and then arrest an officer who once kept inmates behind these gates. He may now be joining them if convicted of felony charges. Warden Sonberg said, "We would hope that one isolated incident in no way shape or form is a reflection of everyone else." Diaz was booked in to the Cochise County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He posted bail less 24 hours after his arrest. kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=5425071&nav=HMO6
