06.30.2006 - CENTERVILLE — A corrections officer was arrested Wednesday for smuggling an assortment of drugs into the St. Mary Parish Jail. Allen M. Granger, 22, of Morgan City, was charged with possession of marijuana, Adipex, Hydrocodone and Xanax with intent to distribute, as well as entering contraband into a penal institution and malfeasance in office. St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Sonnier said narcotics agents arrested Granger following an investigation into the smuggling of drugs into the jail. He was arrested at 7:21 p.m. while on duty. Sonnier said Granger had been employed with the sheriff’s office for a few months. He said a corrections officer is considered a starting position. Granger is the second St. Mary Parish sheriff’s employee to be arrested for smuggling drugs into the jail in the past two years. Gilbert Bonin, 38, of Franklin, was arrested for smuggling marijuana into the jail in February of 2005. “When you’re hiring people, you look into their background,” he said. “Why they start doing that, I can’t tell you.” Granger was booked into the Berwick Police Department Jail without bond. Sonnier said it is customary to book officers into a jail other than the one where they work for their safety. www.iberianet.com/articles/2006/06/29/news/news/news65.txt
