July 13, 2006 - A Greensville County deputy has been indicted on charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine and marijuana. He also is accused of extorting money from drug dealers and robbing them of their drugs, federal officials said.
Officer Timothy W. Williams, 35, of Emporia was indicted yesterday and is accused of distributing more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, as well as powder cocaine between 2004 and June 2006. Williams is also charged with conspiring to distribute marijuana on June 5, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg and James Gregorious of the Drug Enforcement Administration announced the indictment. Agents of the DEA Task Force investigated the case.
Documents filed in federal court allege that Williams used his position with the Greensville County Sheriff's Office to conduct traffic stops of known drug dealers after he had received information that they would be transporting narcotics, prosecutors said in the announcement.
Williams allegedly seized the narcotics and redistributed them for street-level distribution. Williams is also alleged to have extorted money from area dealers, threatening to have them arrested if they did not pay what he demanded.
Williams was arrested on June 13 and is being held without bond. If convicted, he faces from 10 years to life in prison.
Williams has been with the sheriff's office for six years. At the time of his arrest, Greensville Sheriff Wyatt Lee said Williams was immediately suspended without pay.
Lee added that he did not know about the investigation until after the arrest and did not know under what circumstances Williams was allegedly distributing drugs.
