03/10/2006 - A federal judge surprised a former police officer yesterday, giving him probation after the man pleaded guilty to operating a methamphetamine lab.
When Senior U.S. District Judge Alan N. Bloch took the bench yesterday, he planned to sentence Michael Lance Baird to 12 months in prison, he said. But after reviewing letters of support and hearing testimony from the defendant's mother, cousin and future employer, the judge sentenced him to the four months he already had served at the Allegheny County Jail, one year of probation and a $2,000 fine. Mr. Baird, 37, must wear a monitoring device for the first six months.
The Ross patrol officer was on disability leave when he was arrested in February 2005 after police raided a neighbor's apartment in Shadyside.
The apartment's occupants told officers Mr. Baird and his girlfriend might be operating a drug lab.
The couple agreed to a search and were arrested when officers found equipment used to make the drug.
Mr. Baird was later fired from the Ross police force.
In exchange for Mr. Baird's plea, the government agreed to drop two other felony charges.

U.S. District Judge Alan N. Bloch must be a real cop lover to give this officer only probation. Then again most federal judges like Alan N. Bloch are just corrupt pawns for the government.
With the "war on drugs" supposedly so out of control in today's society pencil dick judges like Bloch, only give probation to a "public servants," who happened to be in law enforcement and broke the law? Any other citizen would have been put away in prison. What kind of example are you setting Judge Bloch?
I challenge Judge Alan N. Bloch, to show the readers of this message board of any proof that you as a judge have given "probation" and not prison time, for a "meth lab" to just "one" citizen in the last year, other than officer Michael Baird.
What is this crap about Judge Bloch reading letters from officer Michael Baird's mommy, cousin and future employer? Wonder if Michael Baird's new employer is going to be at another police department or with a drug dealer?
So in the future if anyone goes before Judge Alan N. Bloch, be sure to bring a note from your mommy.
