07.07.2006 - A former East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy accused of shaking down a drug informant was indicted Thursday on drug and gun charges. Officer Larry Wright, 25, was charged with attempting to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. According to a criminal complaint, on June 19 Wright took $2,500 and a quarter kilo of artificial cocaine from the informant with the promise to “get rid of” pending felony criminal charges. He was wearing his uniform and service revolver when he allegedly took the drugs and money. Federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents arrested Wright about 5:20 p.m. June 21. ATF agents had wired the informant and recorded telephone conversations with Wright for several days before the exchange. Wright worked at Parish Prison. He is being held in a prison outside the parish for security reasons. He will remain in prison pending trial. Wright joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2003 and was fired after the arrest. www.2theadvocate.com/news/3291976.html
