January 4, 2007 (Lexington County) - A correctional officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman at a home near Lexington, and deputies say he told them "demons" drove him to do it. Officials think the Columbia man attacked the woman on three separate occasions. Paul Williams, Jr., 37, was arrested on two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Williams is accused of inappropriately touching the woman at about 2pm on November 27, according to Sheriff James Metts. Williams also is accused of inappropriately touching the woman at about 12am on December first while the woman was asleep. In addition, Williams is accused of performing a sexual act on the woman at about 12am on December 21 while she was asleep. All the incidents occurred at the home near Lexington. Williams is related to the victim and formerly lived with the victim, Metts said. The victim reported the sexual assaults to the Sheriff's Department on December 26. Detectives began investigating the case and obtained arrest warrants for Williams on Tuesday, January 2. Investigators arrested Williams on Wednesday, January 3. The state Department of Corrections employs Williams as a correctional officer at Broad River Correctional Institution off Broad River Road in Columbia. Williams was being held on Thursday, January 4 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $75,000. www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5893283&nav=menu36_3
