An appeals court has overturned the sex conviction of a former East Ridge city police officer. Officer Keith Maynard was two years into a 30-year sentence when the Georgia Court of Appeals reversed his 2004 conviction on aggravated child molestation charges. Maynard was released from jail in Ringgold, Ga., Monday, just one day before his 35th birthday. East Ridge is a suburb of Chattanooga, Tenn., but Maynard had been charged in Georgia. That's where he lives and where prosecutors claimed some of the incidents with a female police department Explorer unit member occurred. Maynard had also been charged with two counts of statutory rape of the 15-year-old girl, but was acquitted of those charges. Neither side plans a further appeal, but the prosecutor said he will ask for a new trial of Maynard on the charges he was convicted of. www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=84145
