05/10/2006 - 05/08/2006 - MURRIETA – A Riverside County sheriff's deputy charged with rape and related crimes was put on unpaid leave, authorities said Tuesday.
John Wayne Leseberg, 42, pleaded not guilty May 5 to 10 charges ranging from sexual assault to witness intimidation in two separate cases. He was put on unpaid administrative leave the same day, said Sgt. Earl Quinata of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
"If someone is charged with a felony or has any moral turpitude issues, that is an option the department can exercise," Quinata said.
Leseberg had been on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations he sexually assaulted two people while on duty in November 2004.
He was arrested on April 26 and charged with sexual assault and three other charges in that case, and later released on $50,000 bail, court records show.
A week later, Leseberg was again arrested on suspicion of intimidating a witness, assault with intent to commit rape and four other charges. The second alleged sexual assault occurred in September 2005.
Leseberg's bail was upped to $2 million after the second arrest and he is being held at Southwest Detention Center. A felony settlement conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., May 11, in both cases.
