02/21/2006 - Officer Tracey Giles turned himself into police around eight this morning. He's charged with aggravated sodomy and violating his oath of office. Investigators say it happened on October 30th in a Columbus neighborhood off Buena Vista Road. This is a case where DNA played an important role. The alleged sex crime occurred nearly two months ago. Police tell News Leader Nine DNA samples collected at the scene matched that of officer Giles. "We got a call from the victim of the burglary that told us that she was then the victim of a sexual offense that had been perpetrated on her by the officer," says Police Chief Rick Boren. According to Boren, when the attack was first reported police quickly conducted an investigation. During that investigation DNA samples were collected. "Our investigation concluded yesterday afternoon when a chemical examination of a substance found inside was positive for the officer involved," says Boren. 36 year old Giles who's been with the police department for almost 10 years has been released on bond. He's still on administrative leave with pay but will receive a preliminary hearing on Thursday, December 22 to answer to the charges. Boren says "We want to assure the public it's definitely a black eye it's definitely an embarrassment to me and this columbus police department. but this is not the way our officers handle situations when they respond to scenes." Even though Giles has been placed on administrative leave with pay that could change as a result of personnel actions. www.wtvm.com/Global/story.asp?S=4269191&nav=menu91_3
