06.28.2006 - WESTERLY, R.I. --A Westerly police officer was accused Monday of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl.
Officer Don Thompson, 39, was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault after allegedly attacking the girl following a "Public Officer Appreciation Night" at a restaurant on June 16. He was off-duty at the time, police said.
Police Chief Edward Mello said the woman filed a complaint with police that day, and the investigation was referred to the State Police.
Westerly police also charged Thompson with reckless driving, operating with a suspended license and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Mello said the driving offenses stem from an incident the same day as the assault, but he wouldn't divulge further details.
Thompson has been suspended without pay because of the assault charges he now faces, Mello said.
