05.26.2006 - SEASIDE, Ore. -- A former Seaside police officer was arraigned Thursday on 33 charges of official misconduct, witness tampering, sexual abuse and criminal nonsupport.
A 13-year veteran of the department, Thomas Cain was fired late last year. He was arrested Wednesday and held overnight in jail.
Most of the charges stem from alleged improper sex relations with someone connected to the police department and questions about his truthfulness when that and other issues were investigated.
City files obtained by The Daily Astorian newspaper indicate that Cain was investigated for the alleged relationship in 2004. Cain told the newspaper the matter was "an unfounded rumor."
The paper determined that the Clatsop County District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute cases brought by Cain because it considered him untrustworthy.
