03/03/2006 - A part-time police officer for the city of Sedgwick has been suspended after being charged with multiple counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.
Anthony Peluso, 28, was arrested Feb. 14 and faces a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Sedgwick County District Court.
He is charged with seven felonies that include aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties.
Court records show that Peluso is accused of molesting a girl on at least three occasions -- the first time when she was 13 -- between December 2003 and January.
Peluso, who lives in Valley Center, remained in the Sedgwick County Jail on $100,000 bond.
Sedgwick Police Chief Ray Huff said Peluso worked in Sedgwick for two or three months before his arrest and was one of six part-time officers.
"He wasn't on the street every day of the week," Huff said. "He only worked a few days a month."
Peluso will be fired if found guilty, Huff said.
Valley Center Police Chief Kelly Parks said Peluso worked as an officer in his city for about two years before resigning in September 2001 over scheduling conflicts.
Between those two police jobs, Peluso worked briefly as an emergency dispatcher for Sedgwick County emergency communications. Employment records show he became a dispatcher trainee in March 2003 but left about 10 weeks later.
The criminal charges against Peluso list no Sedgwick or Valley Center officials as witnesses, and there was no indication that any of the charges were related to his work as a police officer.
