Officer fired after sex arrest 02/16/2006 - LEESBURG, Ga. - A Lee County detention officer has been fired after he was charged with having sex with a woman in custody. Officer John Sigmon, 40, was fired Tuesday after the incident came to light, Lee County Chief Deputy Dennis Parker said. A 29-year-old female inmate told officials Tuesday morning that Sigmon had sex with her Sunday night, Parker said. The sheriff's department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigated the complaint. Sigmon told GBI agents and Parker that he had consensual sex with the woman, but the woman "described that she was intimidated into it," Parker said. "My staff member had sex with her, and it's against the law," Parker said. "He betrayed the Sheriff's Office. He betrayed our trust. He was very remorseful about it, but that still doesn't make it right." The woman had been in the jail for a week on charges of entering automobiles, Parker said. At the time of the incident with Sigmon, he was being held in an isolation cell because she was having problems with the other female inmates, he said. Sigmon began work for the Lee County Sheriff's Office on Sept. 26, 2004, Parker said. Before that, he worked at the Dougherty County Jail from May 2001-October 2002, Parker said.
