12.28.2006 - SEAMAN, Ohio -- Funny money was no laughing matter for a member of the Seaman Police Department earlier this month as SPD is again under a microscope for alleged illegal activities.
SPD Officer Gregory Blankenship was arrested earlier this month and is facing serious consequences for his alleged actions, including possible termination of his career in law enforcement, said officials.
According to Adams County Sheriff's Office investigators, Blankenship was arrested Dec. 8, for attempting to trade a fake $20 bill to a juvenile for a real one.
"The incident was immediately reported to ACSO," said Detective Shawn Cooley.
Shortly thereafter, Blankenship was taken into custody by Cooley.
"Blankenship was charged with criminal simulation and is awaiting a court appearance," said Cooley.
Blankenship has been cooperating with the authorities on the investigation, said Cooley.
"It was a really good looking bill, but it was a fake," said Cooley.
Other Seaman Police Department members have been under scrutiny in recent weeks.
On Oct. 22, SPD Chief Charles Crawford was placed on paid suspension on undisclosed charges. Ohio Bureau of Investigation has been handling the Crawford investigation. He has a 20-year career with SPD and unsuccessfully ran for the office of Adams County sheriff.
In the meantime, SPD Acting Chief Steve Spratt , along with a volunteer squad of auxiliary police officers are working to protect the city without the help of one full time officer, Crawford and part time officer Blankenship.
Arresting a fellow law enforcement officer is not a duty any officer looks forward to, officers said.
"It is difficult , but when the law is broken we all have our job to do," said Cooley.
