11.04.2006 - EATONTOWN — A Jersey City police officer who lives in Ocean Grove has been arrested and charged by three police departments in two days for involvement in two separate criminal acts, authorities said.
Officer Dean A. Hashmi, 37, was arrested and charged Wednesday by borough police with filing a false police report and attempted criminal theft by deception, Detective Sgt. John Cleary said.
Hashmi, a nine-year veteran of the Jersey City Police Department, told borough police his car was stolen at the Monmouth Mall while he shopped on Wednesday, Cleary said.
But police became suspicious when Hashmi's story changed several times during questioning, and Hashmi later admitted he lied, Cleary said.
The car was found later Wednesday in Hillside. Police there charged Hashmi with abandoning his car, a 2000 Audi TT.
On Thursday, Hashmi, who is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the charges against him, was arrested by Jersey City Police and charged with possession of stolen property, a police spokesman there said.
A police internal investigation of Hashmi revealed that several months ago Hashmi paid a Jersey City Department of Public Works employee $300 for a refurbished police radio. A division of the DPW in Jersey City repairs radios for the Police Department, Jersey City Sgt. Edgar Martinez said.
The employee also was charged in the incident. Administrative charges against Hashmi, which could be levied against him following the outcome of the criminal charges, are being considered by the Jersey City Police Department, Martinez said.
