September 23, 2006 - NEWARK, N.J. -- An Irvington, N.J. police officer has been arrested on charges of stealing police department evidence marked as narcotics, handguns and case files. The officer was arrested Fridiay night after bags of such evidence were found in a storage facility in Union County. The storage unit was rented by a veteran 18-year officer. A spokesman for the Essex County prosecutor’s office said the narcotics found were cocaine, heroine and marijuana. Also found in the storage unit were a large number of police case files.
