Judge clears Richland Sheriff's Dept. in fatal shooting
06.02.2006 - Richland) June 2, 2006 - A judge has cleared the Richland County Sheriff's Department of any wrong-doing in connection with a fatal shooting.
In November 2002, 19-year-old Chad Jones was killed by a Richland deputy after being arrested and handcuffed. Authorities say Jones had taken control of a patrol car and was driving toward two officers.
The 19-year-old Jones had been arrested after stealing a car and leading deputies on a chase through a Columbia neighborhood. He managed to squeeze through the Plexiglas separating the back and front seats of a patrol car and tried to drive away.
A deputy shot him in the back of the head.
A coroner's jury in 2004 cleared the deputy in the shooting.
Jones' family had filed a civil suit against the Richland County Sheriff's Department, but the judge said there is no merit to the lawsuit and no negligence on the part of the sheriff's department.
