02/16/2006 - Cincinnati, Ohio - The Feds will not bring civil rights charges against the white police officer who shot an unarmed black teenager in 2001.
The U.S. Department closed its case against Stephen Roach. Though authorities say they found inconsistencies in his story about whether he thought Timothy Thomas was armed or not, they add it is not enough to charge him.
Thomas, who was 19, was running away from police concerning misdemeanor charges. His death sparked the worst riot in the city’s history, leaving a dozen injured, nearly 800 arrested, and a mandatory curfew.
Roach was acquitted on all charges related to Thomas' death in 2001, and currently works on the police force for a Cincinnati suburb.
