Group attacks officer trying to arrest graduation visitor 06.07.2006 - INDIANAPOLIS -- A group of people attacked a police officer who was trying to arrest a disruptive audience member during graduation at Northview Middle School, according to police reports.
Washington Township Schools Police Officer Gregory Blake was called to the North Central High School auditorium after a group of women began interrupting the ceremony. Blake instructed the women to be quiet and respectful, according to a police report.
Eventually, Blake asked them to leave and followed them to the parking lot. One member of the group yelled and cursed at Blake, the report said. When she tried to return to the school, Blake arrested her and tried to handcuff her, he wrote in the report.
A group of the woman's friends -- and possibly some children -- formed a "large protective circle" around her and began to attack the officer, the report said.
"Deputy Blake could not positively identify the individuals who were pushing and shoving him," the report said.
Shanie L. Jones, 35, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.
Norman Foust, Washington Township Schools director of security, said arrests happen about every other year at district graduation ceremonies.
"It's just one of those things that can escalate out of hand," Foust said. "Those kids deserve to be recognized as graduates. . . . Our directions are if (audience members) yell and scream, we escort them out."
