04/08/2006 - A Redmond police officer was arrested Friday afternoon, accused of pulling over a driver in Bend, grabbing his throat and hitting him in the mouth after allegedly yelling obscenities at him about his driving.
Robert Charles Stratton, 53, was cited for fourth-degree assault and official misconduct and released, officials said.
Bend police responded to a reported assault around 4 p.m. Thursday in the 2700 block of Northeast 27th Street, said Capt. Sandi Baxter.
The reporting party, Bradley Allen Thompson, 43, of Bend, told officers he had been driving south on 27th Street near Mountain View High School, accompanied by his 9-year-old daughter, Baxter said.
Thompson said a white car quickly approached him from behind and began tailgating him. He said the driver activated red and blue lights, at which time he realized it was an unmarked police car, and he pulled over near the school.
Thompson said the man, who he believed to be an officer, approached his car but was not wearing a uniform. He claimed Stratton yelled obscenities at him regarding his driving, then assaulted him by grabbing his throat and hitting him in the mouth.
The man, later identified as Stratton, then left the area, according to the alleged victim, who said he got the car's license plate number and contacted Bend police.
Baxter said investigators determined Stratton was driving an unmarked police car and was returning from department training and at the time of the alleged altercation. He was contacted Friday afternoon and arrested.

Nine months after an alleged attack, a former Redmond police officer has been formally charged with assault and harassment charges, accused of pulling over, grabbing and striking a motorist in northeast Bend last spring. Crook County District Attorney Gary Williams, called in to investigate the matter, announced Monday that Robert Charles Stratton, 54, will be arraigned Tuesday in Deschutes County Circuit Court on fourth-degree assault, a Class A misdemeanor, and harassment, a Class B misdemeanor. According to the DA's "information" filed with the court, Stratton was driving home from firearms training in a Redmond patrol car on April 4 when he pulled over Bradley Thompson, 43, of Bend on Northeast 27th Street, near Mountain View High School. Thompson later told officers he was driving south on the street, accompanied by his 9-year-old daughter, when a white car quickly approached from behind and began tailgating him. He said the driver activated red and blue lights, and he realized it was an unmarked police car. Thompson said the man got out of the car and approached him, not wearing a uniform. He claimed Stratton yelled obscenities at him regarding his driving, then grabbed his throat and hit him in the mouth, as he sat in his car. Stratton was arrested that afternoon and cited for fourth-degree assault and official misconduct, then released. The officer was placed on paid leave during an internal investigation, then fired from the police department in late May. Williams, who occasionally acts as a special prosecutor for Deschutes County, filed the charges and will prosecute the case. www.ktvz.com/story.cfm?nav=news&storyID=17965
