05/17/2006 - PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Woonsocket police officer is found guilty of assaulting a handcuffed prisoner.
A judge in Providence District Court on Friday found patrolman Ronald Marcos guilty of hitting the man while taking him into custody during an arrest last October.
The judge sentenced Marcos to one year of probation.
Chad Chiappone—who was arrested after a disturbance at a bar filed a complaint against Marcos with the Woonsocket police department’s internal affairs officer. The police department charged Marcos with assault and battery.
An assistant city solicitor tells The Call of Woonsocket that Marcos is appealing the judge’s finding. Marcos will be able to have a second trial in Providence Superior Court, where the case has been transferred.
