EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP- A former Pleasantville Police Officer has accused the township police department of improprieties, including untoward actions against his son and members of his family.
Pierre Reid approached the Township Committee during public comments Oct, 12, 2005. What started out as a concern that the Police were unnecessarily pulling over and ticketing his son Pierre Reid Jr. 17, turned into a litany of complaints against the department, some dating back to 2003, ranging from alleged harassment to assault, by Reid and members of Reid's Family and entourage.
The younger Reid, a senior and a football player at Egg harbor Township High School, is now seeing a psychiatrist, Reid told the governing body. He said the ticketing happen on two separate occasions within three weeks of each other.
Reid lives in the Tilton Gardens complex off Tiltion Road near the Air Port circle.
The former Officer is currently involved in litigation against the township. Claims against the officers named in Reid's suit are being investigated by the Atlantic county Prosecutor's Office, according to township officials.
RETALIATION CLAIMED
"There trying to retaliate on my family", Reid said, because of the lawsuits". My daughter has nightmares. "That does not make me happy". sitting solicitor Tara Gary advised Reid not to comment on anything related to his case. "The township committee cannot respond to much what you're saying. "Gary said adding that the proper forum for a ticketing issue is Municipal Court". "I'm not getting any satisfaction anywhere else", Reid said.
Reid said his girlfriend left him for Officer Scott Nell and has since been the target of harassment by other township Officers, which is what he claims in his lawsuit. Police Chief John Coyle said an internal affairs investigation regarding Reid's claims was found to be without base. In a prepared statement, Coyle said "All Reid's allegations will be denied and vigorously defended". Regarding any further comments, Coyle said, "I will not try this case in the newspapers or any other venue.
MAYOR'S FIRST EHTPD COMPLAINT:
"I ve been sitting here for 20 years. This is the first night I have ever had anyone here complain about the police department," said mayor Jame "Sonny" McCullough, outside someone saying they did not like the way an officer talked to them.
Our Police department is one of the largest in Atlantic county. If this was an ongoing thing, you would think there would be more and more complaints.'
We expect our personnel to be courteous,"Coyle and McCullough said he would look into the situation. "I can assure the public we will be working chief and The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office to make sure the tarnish I heard tonight can be explained, McCullough said.
Other women, friends of Reid's stepped up to the microphone and said they, too were harassed by township Officers.
Rosa Ramos, the younger Reid's mother said she has been harassed bu officers while at her son's Thanksgiving football game.
Linda Santello, a witness in Reid's case , told the committed that she was harassed by Nell.
Dana Butler, who no longer lives in Egg harbor Township, said that she and her son were beaten by a officer in 2003. "Nothing was ever investigated," Butler said.
At one point the back and forth between McCullough and Reid got so heated tha McCullough asked Reid was he threaten him under his breath? Reid said he was whispering to his son to pick up a dropped cell phone.
Three days later my son was removed from the football team and expelled a week later. This all started when a officer at the game tried to fire me up. He told me if stepped on the field i would be locked up. After the 4th time of hearing this from him. I advised him that he did not make the laws as he saw fit. He told me that the A/D told him that complaints will be signed if I stepped on the field. I question the A/D. The officer shouted "that's enough, your not at the committed meeting I will lock you up". I questioned him under what charged, I advised him that it was my first amendment right to free speech and I wanted to know why I was the target of a conspiracy of an illegal arrest. 28 days later they got the school board to charge me with disorderly person.
I moved my son out of state to a private school, to avoid the Police Department ruining his future.
