August 05, 2006 - North Bend teenager was found guilty Friday in Dodge County Court of disturbing the peace for tossing water into the face of a Dodge County sheriff's deputy during this year's Old Settlers Days parade. John R. Chromy, 18, was acquitted of two other charges - disturbing an assembly and abuse of a police officer. He was fined $100, the maximum for the violation of the North Bend city ordinance. Chromy was accused of jumping off a float during the June 25 parade, running up to and throwing a bowl of water in the face of Deputy Dustin Weitzel, who was on duty for traffic control. “I was shocked that someone would do that to a law enforcement officer,” Weitzel testified during a bench trial. “I felt disrespected.” Chromy said parade organizers told the high school seniors on the float they could not throw water on people who asked them not to. He said Weitzel never told him not to throw water at him. Chromy also said it was never his intent to hurt anyone. “This is something law-abiding people don't do,” said Deputy Dodge County Attorney Oliver Glass. “It was shocking and it was abusive.” “Mr. Chromy, what you did in those circumstances is not justifiable,” Judge Kenneth Vampola said. “I don't care how hot it is, or what the circumstances are. You don't do that to an officer.” www.fremontneb.com/articles/2006/08/05/
