July 08, 2006 - GALLUP, N.M. - A former Gallup police officer has been arrested for allegedly shooting at the home of a McKinley County sheriff’s deputy last December. Officer Steve Coleman is charged with one count of retaliation against a witness, nine counts of firing at an unoccupied residence and one count of criminal damage to property, according to Assistant District Attorney Alfred Walker. Coleman was already facing charges of negligent arson, dangerous use of an explosive and breaking and entering stemming from a break-in at a private social service agency earlier this year. Walker says authorities searched Coleman’s home after his arrest in the break-in case and evidence seized there matched evidence that was recovered at Deputy James Mariano’s home following the drive-by shooting. Mariano wasn’t home at the time of the shooting. www.kobtv.com/index.cfm?viewer=storyviewer&id=26666&cat=NMTOPSTORIES
