EL PASO, TEXAS – An El Paso police officer was arrested today for allegedly pulling a handgun on people while in an off-duty confrontation over a man urinating in public last year, a Police Department spokesman said.
Officer Ricky Jordan, 37, was arrested after being indicted by a grand jury on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of official oppression and two counts of assault causing bodily injury.
The incident occurred in October, when Jordan allegedly confronted a man urinating in the apartment complex where Jordan resided, police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.
The argument escalated into an altercation with another man and a woman.
“I believe during the incident he did draw down (a gun) on one or two of the individuals,” Sambrano said.
The victims, whose names were not released, filed a complaint that was investigated by the police Special Investigations Group.
The group, known as SIG, handles cases involving police officers and other public servants.
At the end of November, investigators turned their case over to the district attorney's office for review, a police news release stated.
On Tuesday, Jordan was indicted by a grand jury, Sambrano said.
Jordan turned himself in and was released from the El Paso County Jail on a $3,500 bond, jail records showed.
Jordan is a 12-year member of the El Paso Police Department, assigned to the Central Regional Command Center.
He has been placed on administrative duty until an administrative investigation is complete, Sambrano said.
Neither Jordan nor his lawyer could be reached for comment.
The crime of official oppression occurs when a public servant intentionally mistreats, unlawfully arrests or impedes the rights of another. The crime is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
Assault causing bodily injury is also a Class A misdemeanor while aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a felony.
