08.16.2006 - RAINSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A Rainsville police officer, who was charged with stealing a $200 digital camera from a local resident, has resigned. DeKalb County sheriff's deputies arrested Officer Richard Wayne Hartman, 41, about 11 a.m. Friday on a charge of third-degree theft. Hartman is accused of stealing a camera from Shannon Gilbert. Police Chief Roger Byrd said Hartman had been employed with the city for about a year and served as a part-time officer with the Geraldine Police Department. Byrd said the theft allegedly occurred while Hartman was on duty. "It is with great sadness that we announce this arrest," Byrd said. "The Rainsville Police Department has a long and proud history of public service and we regret that this has happened." Hartman was later released from jail on a $1,500 bond. www.al.com/newsflash/regional/index.ssf?/base/news-23/115574814393960.xml&storylist=alabamanews
