08.16.2006 - MASON -- The former Mason police officer charged with burglary and assault is now awaiting an Aug. 25 arraignment in Warren County Common Pleas Court. Officer Paul Collins, 32, 112 Elmlinger Drive in Mason, lost his position with the Mason Police Department about two weeks ago. He was indicted by a grand jury on felony and misdemeanor charges Aug. 7. Charges stem from an incident June 26 in which Collins kicked down the door of a residence in Hamilton Township and allegedly assaulted Melissa Campbell, an officer in the Mason Police Department. Charles Rittgers, Collins' attorney, said the indictment "wasn't any big secret" and that after Collins is arraigned, a pre-trial date will be set. Andy Sievers, first assistant prosecutor in Warren County, said the pretrial will likely be set about a week after the arraignment. "Hopefully, by that time, both sides will know each other's case," Rittgers said. At that point, Rittgers said he and Warren County Prosecutor Rachel Hutzel will meet and possibly work out an agreement before a trial begins. Collins is facing a burglary charge, a felony which carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison, and an assault charge, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail. news.communitypress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060816/NEWS01/608160377/1085/Local
